Eye Motif Ribbon
February 2023
Materials: 20/2 spun silk
Tools: 16 weaving cards
Length: ~ 71 cm (28 in)
Width: 11 mm (0.43 in)
After working with the fairly thick cotton carpet warp for a while, I was ready to try a new material, so I bought some 20/2 spun silk in a bunch of colors from Eowyn de Wever's shop and wove a couple of small ribbons with it. My initial impressions - this stuff is beautiful, with vivid colors and an almost metallic luster. Weaving with it was also delightful, as the slippery texture meant that the threads glided smoothly past each other, in a way that was inherently pleasing and made the overall process feel easier.
For this first piece I made with the silk, I used the Hallstatt 152 pattern as a starting point, widened it, and kept messing around with it in Tablet Weaving Draft Designer until I came up with something thoroughly chaotic, with the main design idea being a string of turquoise "eyes" running down the center of the band.
